Recovery Treatment Romantic Couple

We have been helping people in the Provo area take the first step from substance dependency towards recovery, by providing safe, supervised clinical facilities and custom-created detox procedures. Detoxification, or detox, gets rid of amassed drugs and cleanses them from the body, an important first step in the rehabilitation process. The idea of detox might be frightening for anyone who has attempted to quit using drugs or alcohol using the “cold turkey” approach, or for those that may have been using for years, but it doesn’t need to be. For over a decade, our staff takes precautions to make sure that detox is safe and appropriate for each and every patient. For any questions, or to talk to a detox professional, call our professional at 385-332-3938 today!

Varieties of Detox

The two sorts of detox generally available are medically supervised withdrawal and social detoxification. Addiction professionals will select one or the other depending upon:

  • the kind of substance being abused
  • length of abuse
  • age of the client
  • the mental state of the patient
  • physical health of the client
  • what environment the specialists believe will be best for the patient

Medically supervised withdrawal is usually suggested for those that have been hooked on:

  • alcohol
  • pain medications (prescription or pharmaceutical)
  • barbiturates or sedatives
  • opioids (heroin, OxyContin7, codeine)

Doctor-prescribed detox medications can ease some of the worst withdrawal symptoms that those substances cause. Anyone suffering from serious alcoholism, or who has been abusing alcohol in conjunction with different substances, should also participate in medically supervised withdrawal. The medications provided during medically supervised withdrawal can prevent health conditions resulting from severe alcohol withdrawal, like hallucinations, seizures, or other physical and psychological problems addicts experience when trying to quit “cold turkey.” In addition, anybody that has ever experienced hallucinations or seizures has a life-threatening sickness, or has been diagnosed with certain mental health problems will require medically supervised withdrawal so as to safely wean themselves from drugs or alcohol.

Social detoxification is better for addicts that are expected to only experience mild withdrawal symptoms, from using drugs such as:

  • marijuana
  • cocaine
  • methamphetamine
  • occasional opioid use
  • occasional alcohol use

In this kind of detox, clients’ health is supervised by medical staff, while therapists try to help them through the cravings of withdrawal without relying on medication. Social detoxification is a communal process, and clients live together while they detox, instead of being segregated in institution-like rooms. The social living arrangement prepares people to participate in a rehab program in which they will be living and working alongside other people in recovery.

Detox Treatment Utah’s Techniques

Different substances are responsible for different kinds of withdrawal symptoms, which is the reason our detox center provides such a large variety of detox services. Depressants (for example, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and alcohol) generally require a gradual reduction of the drug while medications are used to prevent possible:

  • hallucinations
  • tremors
  • seizures
  • increased blood pressure
  • higher heart rate
  • increased body temperature

On the other hand, withdrawal from stimulants (including amphetamines, methamphetamine, cocaine, and Ritalin) is generally mild enough that addicts can endure with emotional support from family members, loved ones, and therapists. When necessary, doctors can prescribe medication to prevent stimulant psychosis, which can cause:

  • suicidal feelings
  • suicide attempts
  • paranoid thoughts
  • psychosis

Withdrawal symptoms from opiates (like heroin, morphine, codeine, and OxyContin) range in severity and can include:

  • runny nose
  • sweating
  • nervousness
  • depression
  • quickening pulse
  • rapid breathing
  • bone pain
  • muscle sensitivity
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

Take the First Step

While it’s a necessary first step, detox is JUST a first step, and it’s never supposed to take the place of the whole rehabilitation, or rehab, process. Unlike other detox centers, Alcohol Recovery Rehabilitation offers guidance during and after a detoxification process because they are aware of how easy it is to relapse after becoming sober. Detox Treatment Utah uses detox in combination with rehabilitation. Total recovery is attainable, and addicts are most successful if detox is used in combination with drug and alcohol rehab, like Drug Recovery Treatment.
